Follow Up After Surgery!

Well, Tuesday morning I had the surgery. Tuesday afternoon and night was difficult. Very uncomfortable! I was taking pain pills every three hours for a couple of days and was still struggling to sleep. One night I did manage to fall asleep and realized how much better I was when I woke up at 4 in the morning in very little pain. Now I was suppossed to take a pain pill at 3:00 and had obviously missed it. So I took it at 4:00 and never took another one. So here I am four days after surgery, mot… Continue

Surgery Scheduled!!!

Ok everyone, I found out this morning that I am going to need surgery on Tuesday morning. The doc said that I would be recieving a plate with 8 screws and a bone graft from my hip to fill in parts on my collarbone that are not repairable. He also said that a few days after surgery i could plug my bike into the trainer to spin out my legs...provided i stay out of my bars keeping no weight on my arms...i will keep you all posted!

Follow Up From the Accident...

So, like I said before...lots of people have been asking about my situation with my crash. I think I am going to continue to update everyone so that it will be easier and hopefuly answer your questions. It turns out I do need surgery. The first x-rays that were taken after I arrived at Hackensack weren't too bad. Although, it was very clearly broken...the doctors were pretty sure with rest and not moving that it would heal pretty well. However, I went to an orthopedic doctor yesterday and he to… Continue

Lets All Be Safe!!!

Hey everyone, I have to add to what mike already typed about crashes. Lots of people have been reaching out to me the past couple of days to find out my situation. While I would love to call everyone back...my short term memory isn't the greatest right now...so I hope this helps! I was out riding with some people this past Saturday morning. Not sure how many of us there were or what time we left or what time I exactly crashed. That might be that way for a reason! I know we left relatively early… Continue

Hey! I heard you were out riding? You suck, er, I mean, that's great! Wish I could...

How'd it go? I did manage to get into the pool on Tuesday, and while it wasn't pretty, I did get 1500y in. Still very weak, and not allowed to push hard yet. But, progress...

Cheers!

Hey!! Congrats on getting the OK to get back at it :-) That's awesome!! LP was a blast - we missed you! Dave and I rode 126 miles (my longest ever :-) The weather was on-and-off rain, but it could have been worse...HTFU, right?? I haven't been able to run much, but Peter was a huge help in figuring out what's going on with it...hopefully it'll be cleared up by IMLP!!!

Hey Dan! I started running and PT last week. It's amazing how fast your fitness falls off. I did manage to do a decent 8 miles on Sunday, so it is coming back. I was told I could bike and swim EASY (and if I fell, it would be "messy", so don't fall). Distefano wants me to wait 12 weeks for a full heal before working out hard on the bike / swim.

That said, I did hit the pool for the first time last night. I took it easy, swimming in the slower lanes. It was OK. The muscle that runs from my jaw to collar bone is VERY tight, and feels funny when I reach in the pool. PT is working on it.

Since running is really the only thing I can do hard (well, riding on the trainer too, but that's boring), I have to be careful not to over do it. My legs were definitely tired and achy yesterday. We'll see how they are with a day off later this afternoon.

So, what have you been allowed to do, and how is it going for you?

Good luck!

Hi Dan, I can really relate to your injury. cause I had a REALLLY bad crash on Easter Sunday ( you heard from my friend Laura), I broke my neck (have fusions now) my left arm in several places including the collar bone and my R upper arm and pelvis. The worst part of this recovery is the progress never feels fast enough and I so want to return to sport. ( I am on a treadmill, walk/jogging ) I am a physical therapist and I feel beeing on the other side, as the patient, is difficult. I would love to hear how you are progressing and love to know if there are any other people out there who are working past a severe injury. Good Luck with your recovery, hope it goes easy,

Wow - lucky you. Dr. DiStefano won't let me even talk about PT until later this month. So, it's the bike trainer for me.

Hey - I did find a cool DVD for spinning to. It's called "Race Day with Robbie Ventura" (search google to find it online). It came with my CycleOps trainer and I never watched it until now.

The cool thing is that it has two warm up sections, a race (40 min criterion) and two warm downs. You can actually select which segments you want to watch with your DVD remote, and it will play them in order (a very interesting feature that I've never seen on a DVD before). You get to "ride along" with Robbie during the race and listen to his strategy, etc. while changing intensity to match his. I found it more interesting than just spinning to a movie.

I also have a Spinnervals DVD which I never watched. I'm going to compare the two today.

Great to hear that surgery was a success, Dan! Do follow the Doc's advice, however. I can say from TOO MUCH experience that trying do more than the Doc recommends is not going to win any contest and may indeed set you back some. Thank God my recovery is going pretty well, and part of the reason is that it put me so far under that I was afraid NOT to follow the Doc's advice very closely.
I'll look forward to seeing you at Wyckoff.
Chuck
