Yes, I am always in half shape and only push the mileage up for six weeks. I feel that aside from family this also helps keep from breaking down physically and emotionally. It really is enough.
That's funny, Trust me I know what I can get away with for an Ironman. I train hard for 6 weeks - that's the family limit on being really supportive I've found:) The good part is they get to skip school and come to Hawaii most years so that gives it an extra boost. I will probably do the challenge again as well. I am going to a big Pediatric Brain Tumor Conference in Chicago this weekend and will be networking away! Congratulations again.
Thanks so much. I'm sorry we didn't connect, but I completely understand how the days leading up to a race can get away from you. I usually try to hang very low for sudden bike issues etc... My small ring did not work in the race so I can relate to the derailer issue - my quads are fried from doing all the climbs in the big ring! Great job!!! That's an awesome improvement - you will get to Kona without a doubt. Congratulations!! So did you sign up for next year again? I hope you catch my bike in Kona and I hope it is a windless day and I can go 5:30 on the bike!!!I hope my running injury is behind me and I can run a 3:30 - I love 4 months out from a race it's so easy to dream big:)
Hi Art, Just wanted to give you an example. Just today I received $505 from a 10 year old boy. He had seen my school ironman demo where I get on my bike all race ready and tell about the race and hand out gus for them to try and tell them about raising money for pediatric brain tumors. He just requested that all the kids that come to his birthday make a donation instead of bringing a gift. I bet he feels much better than having 16 new toys he doesn't need! Kids are great when they are given the chance!
Hi Art,
No not a teacher, just a mother of four. I just am consytantly amazed at what the kids can do. I agree all the events are time consuming, enlist as many friends as you can to help. How cool that you were helping in Kona! Did you see any of my kids walking around with the big cutouts of Matt, the little boy who was supposed to cross the line with me, but sadly passed away before the race?It was not my best day, I had a tough time on the bike and I am sure you have seen that blister either on my page or on the main page. I got that at mile 2 of the run. Couldn't wear a shoe again for 9 days and had to go on antibiotics. Anyway, I am sure you will get there if you want to. I am excited for CDA. Keep plugging away on the fundraising. I have a big dinnner next month with a pretty big auction that I am working on right now.
Hi, I agree the press releases are a hit or miss, but keep trying. I have held large dinner/auctions, gotten the local elementary school kids involved with an "Iron" week in gym class where they raised money through pledges, bake sales, car washes, dance benefits, 5k's...obviously that's a lot of things but when I started last year it was my goal to break the record so I went all out. Your cause involves kids so I would really try to get local kids on board. You won't believe their faces when they realize that they can make a difference too. I go to the schools and do a whole Ironman speech/demo which they love. I will attempt to qulaify at St Croix - I have always qualified at a half before, but CDA will be my 6th Ironman and first non Hawaii - I want to see what it is like someplace else. My sister used to live there and is still nearby so I have been there and raced olympic distance nationals there several times. How about you?
