Lets All Be Safe!!!

Hey everyone, I have to add to what mike already typed about crashes. Lots of people have been reaching out to me the past couple of days to find out my situation. While I would love to call everyone back...my short term memory isn't the greatest right now...so I hope this helps!

I was out riding with some people this past Saturday morning. Not sure how many of us there were or what time we left or what time I exactly crashed. That might be that way for a reason! I know we left relatively early and rode for a long time...when I was riding back home (or to the Ridgewood DP, can't remember at the moment) I was hit by a car. I was heading south on Fanklin Turnpike in Ramsey and the car was heading north. The car decided to turn right in front of me and i was hit. I don't remember any details other than what people have told me, but do know i was by myself and riding home almost done with my ride.

The car hit me and I slammed the windsheild. I have a big golf ball sized bruise/swelling on my right trmple and my helmet in that spot was completely crushed, as well as he back of it. I was out cold and had some pretty deep cuts on my neck and shoulders from the windsheid that required me to recieve some blood when I arrived at Hackensack as a trauma victim.

Turns out in the end my collarbone is broken in three places, I am really soar, and have some deep cuts. But I am alive! I was absolutely weaing my helmet the way it should have been worn and couldn't have done anything to prevent the accident according to the police report.

So in the end my season is over! Upsetting as that is...it is forcing me to take some time off and focus on some other parts of my life. So I am already planning out next season and can gaurentee that I will be back as I age up to come in the a bang. So while the situation sucked...its not a complete loss...I learned that I did everything I could...I survived and am not paralized either...and will absolutely be back for next year...maybe even the end of this season!

Hi Dan,
My phone started ringing 10 minutes after we left each other at the corner of 202 and Franklin Turnpike. I couldn't believe it! It just didn't seem possible especially since I was so impressed with you on Saturday. You stopped and helped a complete newbie in the Harriman half who had flatted twice and would have been out of what was certainly his first tri if you hadn't readily offered him your only tube and CO2. You stopped yet again to help another racer who was having problems getting his valve off his disk wheel. I even commented on the good karma you would have. You descended gate hill by my side helping me learn how to deal with my downhill wiminess when you could have gone your usual 50+ mph pace and waited for me at the bottom. I stopped by the trauma center that evening on my way into an event in the city and the nurses all said you were such a nice guy, but that you were pretty out of it. This should not have happened to you on that day but I am so relieved you will be fine with a little down time. Get well soon!

Hey Dan,

Sorry to hear about your crash. Sounds like you have the right attitude about it though. Stay positive! You'll be able to come back faster than you think. Never seems fast enough at the moment but sure enough, you'll see your conditioning and speed come right back. Hang in there!

Dan- I just heard about your crash this morning when I spoke to your Dad. The good news is that you're able to tell the story and Thank God for that. I'm so glad your helmet did its job and sacrificed itself for you. Toni, the babies and I will all be thinking of you and wishing you a quick recovery.
Too bad that your season is over, but as you already know, that's minor compared to what the cost could have been AND you get to focus on other stuff for awhile, while you recharge and get ready to come back stronger than ever!

Chuck, Toni, Adrianna and Anthony!

Dan, I just learned about your crash. I am so glad you are okay. You truly are lucky to be alive but clearly you are meant to still be here! Your injuries will heal and you will be back better than ever. Just make sure you take the time to heal - you've got plenty of more years out there...look at us old folk still kicking. So glad you're safe. Take care, Debbie
