Once again weathermen can't be trusted. "Rain late in the day" was the call before I left my house. "Foggy in some areas". I'll give them that.
Well, as we set up transition, it started to rain, then pour. Unfortunately along with the rain, fog rolled in. After a delay the RD announced the swim would be replaced by a 1.5 mile run. I've worked really hard on my swim and with the water a reported 62 degrees I was really looking forward to the swim. Oh well, when life gives you lemons...
Had a good first run and even though the roads were wet I had no problems navigating the bike course. I felt strong throughout and saw that all of my splits were under 50 mins per lap. I don't manage that in training so I was happy. 4th time up LWD is always hard but I did o.k. and got off the bike w/ a PB 3:18. Not having the swim before surely made a difference but still, I was very happy with this split.
The 2nd run was another story, My calf/achilles hurt from the start. I managed the first 5 miles but thereafter the pain increased. I also felt like my left hammi might cramp at any time. Combining those two things, the course and my decreased mileage beacuse of my injury and this was just a hard run. I managed to jog up the hill at LWD and then I knew the last 3 miles were the easiest. My hammi did spasm at mile 12 but after a quick stretch I was able to get back to running, as it were.
I managed a 1:54:14 run. 8:43 pace. Initially I was disappointed (wanted 8's) but given the injury & the fact that it's not an easy course I probably shouldn't be.
My achillies was really hurting the next day but as I type this on Monday it's feeling better. I'm going to have to alter the plan for the next to 2 weeks or so to give this time to heal (again). I'm not exactly where I want to be health wise, but with two months to go I'm optimisitc that I can get there.
So, I didn't get what I woud've liked from Harriman, namely an actual HIM. But, I like how my bike is progressing and my nutrition was spot on. I'll focus on those positives and move forward. Cautiously.
