I read a couple of other blogs pretty regularly to trigger some creative ideas and pick up some motivating thoughts. Just found "Seth's Blog" by Seth Godin (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/), with one recent post that hit me pretty hard. The general point is to be thankful for the opportunities that you have and basically "go for it", with the punchline being:
"The object isn’t to be perfect. The goal isn’t to hold back until you’ve created something beyond reproach. I believe the opposite is true…

With just under 3 weeks to go until the Big Dance in Placid, I finally feel 100% ready to race. This past Saturday, I rode for 4 hours and covered just under 80 miles-a similar pace that I'm planning for-and felt great getting off the bike. On Sunday morning, I did my last long run-a 20 miler-at goal pace. While it's certainly not fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon, it will meet my goal of doing a 4-4:15 marathon on raceday. I have my last long ride on Friday(4.5-5 hours/90-100 miles…

After a stellar training weekend in LP I spent the last long weekend in bed instead of training. Woke up Saturday w/ a cough, feeling terrible so I went right to the Dr. She heard "something" in my chest, put me on antibiotics and ordered a chest x-ray to rule out, gulp, pnuemonia.
Fast forward to Monday. Meds seemed to be working and THANKFULLY the x-ray came back negative. Dr aslo said she didn't hear anything in my lungs anymore either. I could resume exercise but stop if I get tired.

I'm not usually so excited about getting a flat, but since I was riding alone I had no choice but to try to fix it myself. Of course, it was the rear wheel. Great. I think the tube was defective since there was a half-inch gash but nothing in the tire (and three of the four tubes I bought were all defective...guess I'm lucky it lasted this long!!) First I called a friend to talk me through it...I've watched enough times, but wasn't sure I could do it myself. He insisted that without a tire iron…

Something topical, although a little off-topic (if that's even possible with a blog?), I found this among a tribute to comedian George Carlin, who recently died of heart failure at the age of 71. Nothing multi-sport related, but since it seems that a day can't go by without being bombarded by some form of media drumming home the message that humans are somehow capable of changing the global environment, I thought this captured the essence of the counter-point argument pretty well:

I've known
Richard Izzo for over 10 years now, and watched his athletic career and participation steadily grow around the greater Westchester area. While Richard has been a fixture in the local multi-sport scene as both an athlete and a business professional, he is taking upon the additional challenge of starting a local race this fall that looks like a good one to consider adding to the calendar.
The September 21 race is a "Half Ironman"…

Either OpenTri is getting pretty big, or the law firm that represents WTC in trademark infringement matters is getting pretty busy. I think it's probably a little bit of both, and I need your help to attend to a little clean-up on the site.

1.5 weeks out from the Desert Half...I took a trip out to Osoyoos 2 weeks ago to cycle the bike portion as a confidence builder; apart from the 2 flats I got just before descending Richter Pass on return I really enjoyed the ride - hills make life interesting. Plus with no one around I could just cruise at my own pace ie. a slow one. Hopefully I can stay in my own headspace during the race and keep my pacing.
Sunday I had marked for my last big ride up over Sumas Mtn and return, around 80km. We…

Last Saturday it was race day in Bruges. Some 1075 athletes started in the most beautiful tri race in Belgium. The Pro Race was won by Marino Vanhoennacker who had a 2' lead on Graham O'Grady (NZL) and Dennis Devriendt. Luc Van Lierde, Mr.Ironman himself finished in 4th place with a flat tyre during the bike leg and little running training due to a leg injury. Marino is in big shape and left for Austria on Monday to prepare for Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt ; I would bet my money on him ! Also L…

Friday afternoon Suzie Dominic Dan T. and I loaded up and headed down to Washington NC for the inaugural Washington Sprint Triathlon. The race location is excellent with transition in a open field in the middle of a nice park right on the water, the ride was on flat mostly car free roads and the run winds through a scenic neighbor hood in Washington Park.
To summarize, the Trikes put their stamp solidly on this race with everyone bringing home some awards. On the women’s side Suzie Hosman took h…

5:00:41 83rd Overall, 9th M25-29 AG
Swim: 36:21- Seem slow- last year I was 35 at White Lake. I am a much better swimmer this year. Couple factors- there was a 1 minute run into transition that was added on. According to times the course was about 3 minutes long (Fastest pro's were doing it in 27 and 28, Alex McDonald did 33:20!) I was also in the last wave. Each wave had 100+. Plus I had the fastest swim in my AG at OTM, so I am not too worried about it. Im still confident in my swim.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I get a little giddy around my birthday. It's pretty silly, actually, but ever since I was little I have really enjoyed marking another year -- most likely because it coincided with warmer temperatures, longer days, and school finally letting out.
That doesn't really explain why I enjoy those days now, although once every five years a birthday does have added significance with respect to my age group (apologies to USAT and the ITU, who just can't figure out w…

There are those who watch sports and there are those who play. We're all happily among those who play, I'm sure, but that doesn't mean that we can't enjoy watching occasionally as well. This past weekend was one of those times when I had a chance to watch and learn -- as a spectator of the U.S. Open golf tournament -- how to perform under pressure, as Tiger Woods captured his 3rd U.S. Open title and the 14th major championship of his career.
After the win was secured, there was one quote from T…

I've been involved in triathlon for a long, long time, and with the exception of a couple of road races and one or two triathlon meetings, I really haven't helped out with race direction or management too many times. This past weekend was my first time getting deeply involved in our local tri in Wyckoff, NJ, and it was a ton of fun.
This year's race direction was pretty challenging, due primarily to the amount of roadwork in the area that caused us to have to change the bike course dramatically…

Dug this out of the archives - I actually wrote it back in the early summer of 1999, about 8 weeks before the inaugural Ironman USA on Aug 15, 1999. Here it is:
Overall the bike course is very challenging -- lots of hills, prevailing gusty winds, and a few high-speed decents. It also b…

Wholly crap it was hot at EM. The benefit of relatively calm wind day for the bike was way offset by heat & humidity. It seemed to me that wind conditions & a course that should have translated into a bike PR some how got overwritten by a hot & nasty day. And it only got worse once out of T2. There are tons of trees along much of the course, they just provide exactly 0 shade when the sun is directly overhead. Ice down the jersey just wasn't doing it either. But even after a disappoin…

One of my more memorable college experiences involved a couple of courses taught by Hank Riggs, a Stanford professor who didn't have a PhD, but had a wealth of experience in and out of academia. Hank had worked at Varian, H-P, and consulted with a number of other companies in the valley, in addition to being the professor for "Industrial Accounting" (that's really the course name, I swear, though I don't recall what made the accounting "industrial" ;-).

Most of you are planning to race a half-Ironman distance race at some point, which is a good idea for providing a "dress rehearsal" to help you be better prepared for your upcoming Ironman. If you use all the same fuel, hydration, and equipment that you plan to use in your full-Ironman race, you should be able to gather enough feedback to make any necessary adjustments.
A question that I often get is, "What should I do differently with the schedule before & after my half?" The answer is pre…
