Zach I am wondering why you jumped right in to the competitive season of the Ultra distance plan. I do not think this is a good idea. I come from an endurance background and have completed several marathons. Last year I did my first Ironman in Augus…

I keep all of my training logs on Trainingpeaks.com. The training log portion is free and easy to use. I also am able to go back several years to look at previous workouts. Take a look at it. Steve

Hey Sarah, I work night shifts so I would do one work out in the morning after work and then the other later in the day after I slept. Occasionally I would do both in the afternoon but I saved the bricks for the weekend. As far as nutrition I did s…

Steve, Congrats on Louisville! I'm sure it was an amazing experience. I volunteered at Wisconsin last year and was blown away by the atmosphere...even more than I could imagine! When training did you split your workouts during the week into a morni…

Wisconsin will be my first IM. I'll also be doing the Half-IM in Racine, WI in July. So far, I've done two Olympic distance races and recently did a race that resembled a half IM (1.5k swim, 100k cycle, 10k run). After that race, I feel really confi…

Hey Keith, Just read your page. That's awesome that you volunteered last year. It is unbelievable how much energy and help the volunteers bring to the event. Good luck finding your tri bike. I am in MI, I will see if there is anything at any of the…

Follow the plan and you should do great. I did my first IM last year in Louisville. I followed the plan as closely as possible and had a pretty good day. Other than a flat tire, the swim and ride went just as planned. The run was harder than I thoug…

Ironman Louisville - Race Weekend

Race weekend has finally arrived. I have been preparing for this weekend for the past nine months. I normally work night shifts in the emergency department but the week leading up to the race I was able to switch my shifts so that I was working day shifts. I wanted to give my body a full week to feel like a day person. I finished the day shift on Thursday and spent the rest of the day nervously packing for the weekend. I did do a short swim today as well. We ended up staying out later than plann… Continue

Competitive Season Week 3-6

Well, the past 4 weeks seem to have flown by. I have not been able to run since the middle of week 1 of the competitive season. I have been logging my workouts on Trainingpeaks.com. Looking back at week 3 I only managed to get in 11:15 of the recommended 14:45. I did have some strong swims and a long ride of 85 miles on Sunday but overall it was not a great week of training. The weather in Michigan has been very cold and rainy. I tried to do an open water swim in Torch Lake but even with a wetsu… Continue

Competitive Season Week 1 and 2!

The competitive season has not started off very well for me. In week 1 I was feeling great until Wednesday when I started to feel some pain in my right achilles. I had done a nice 8 mile run at sub 7 min pace and that night I noticed the pain starting. The next day I had a great 1 hour swim and followed that with a 7 mile easy run. That night my achilles decided it would have no more and I developed severe pain with a limp. I decided to skip all of the runs for the rest of the week. The long rid… Continue

IM training weeks 20-22

Well, the last 3 weeks have been pretty good compared to weeks 18 and 19. I had a good talk with Leah and she is definately on board to try and help me finish what I have started. After finishing week 22 and now moving into the competitive season I feel like I can see the finish line. I know there is a lot of work left to be done but I feel like I am mentally able to handle it. Whether or not my body will hold up is another story. I still have pain in the left foot/arch but it doesn't seem to be… Continue

IM training week 18 and 19- the stress is increasing...

Week 18 was a great week of training! I was excited to complete this week because it marks the half way point to Louisville. I was able to complete all of the recommended training this week. We had a trip to Ohio on the weekend so I took Friday off. I took my bike and trainer with us and on Saturday before Emma's Regional gymnastics meet I did a 2:15 ride in the hotel room. It happened to be the day of the NFL draft so I watched all of the pre-draft hype. Emma's meet was awesone and she took fir… Continue

Steve,

Thanks for the suggestion on that training log website. It is pretty complete and has a ton of functionality. Now I finally have a way to satisfy my numerical obsessions. Now I am off to read your blogs. I can already tell they are going to motivate me!

I learned a great deal from Jeff, at the track and on the long rides on Sunday. I used to live in Ortonville on Bald Eagle Lake and would have the Tri group over on Wen for a 1 mile swim and 7 mile run.
Do consider riding with them. Tough group but you can learn a lot
