OpenTri

Hello to everyone, I hope that you have the most happy new year, full of joy an peace.

I became a triathlete two years and five month ago. I've run five ironman 70.3 (included ironman of Pucon two times). Now I would like to try running the Nice Ironman in France.

The thing is that I just started the free program for Ultra distance, and the needed weeks to acomplish it mismatch 'cos the date for the ironman is 27th of june. I've been training before starting the program but I don't know if it is recomended or possible to make a jump on the program for make all the date match.

Maybe I just need to wait for the next year.

So, is it possible to get ready for running an ironman on six month?

The answer should consider the fact that I am not starting from zero.

I know that this specifications aren't precise, so if anyone need more information to give me an advice, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Sebastian!

First of all, welcome to OpenTri! You're on the right track with your preparation, and it sounds like you just need to adjust the program to fit 36 weeks of preparation into the 24 weeks (from today) that you need to get ready for Ironman Nice.

I would recommend the following:
- skip ahead in the program to a week that looks like a little bit less than what you are used to doing now, but don't go beyond week 8.
- once you picked your "new" week one, figure out how many weeks are left in the program (for example, if you start at week 8, there are 28 weeks left
- to trim the remainder of the program down to fit into the 24 weeks remaining, just skip every other week until you "catch up" -- for example, do weeks 9, 11, 13, 15, etc. until you are "caught up" with the program
- when the number of weeks left to Ironman Nice equals the number of weeks left in the program, then just follow the program from there

Hope this makes sense -- have fun with it!

Thank you Mike!

It's make perfect sense for me, but it will be a little difficult to find the week in wich I am 'cos in the last program that I used to follow I had to train between 20 to 25 hours each week.

I would like to qualify to Kona some day, so I will work hard on it.

Thank you so much for your advice, It made me feel a lot of confidence about running in Nice.

Best regards,

Sebastian

That sounds great, Sebastian - I'd be a little worried about you just trying to replicate the volume from your last plan, since the structure of the SuperCoach plan generally means that you can train much more efficiently.

If you think it looks ok, you could very easily just start with week 13 & do weeks 13-36 to get your 24 weeks in before Ironman Nice. If you have any issues with the volume after 3-4 weeks, then you could always make an adjustment to which week to do next.

The structure and balance are built in to the program, so it should be a safe way to proceed. Also, I should point out that several dozen athletes over the years have reported qualifying for Kona with the program, with a few of the younger men going under 10 hours. Obviously putting in the work is your job! ;-)

Have fun with it, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you again Mike for your answer, I am feeling better each day about it.

I have two little questions. First of all, I've ran many half marathons (my last record was 1hr16min) but I've never ran a complete one before. I planed, as a part of my road to Nice, to run the Paris marathon on April. Is this a good idea?

I read the discusions about weight training, but I am little confused about it, some people said that if better to train strenght (by doing few repetitions with heavy weights), and others said that it is better to train by doing many repetitions with small weights. Wich aproach do you think that is better in this case?

Thank you so much for your help, have a nice day,

Sebastian

Hello Mike!

Finally I jumped to 14th week, and I just finished it today.

It was amazing. Really fun, I am really sure that now I am making the best use of my time.

I felt really strong, specially in the bike and in the run. I had to make a little change in the program, 'cos the pool is closed on mondays, so I moved the monday's train for friday, and let monday as the resting day.

I would like to know wich method do you use to mesure intensity on the pool. It is very difficult to swim with a heart rate monitor, so I had to use time per 100m, as an indicator. Is it fine?

Thank you for everithing, have fun, and enjoy your training!

Sebastian
